Found these absolutely fascinating iridescent bugs on a Cowan Creek bushwalk. There were several that appeared to be taking their front ends off and becoming red all over.
I couldn't figure out why it only seemed to shed the front half of its carapace. We eventually decided it did pop out of the back end as well, but it split across the middle and the back half has no legs, so it fell to the ground.
